Migraine Relief in Oceanside, CA

Migraines in Oceanside aren't just bad headaches. An attack can bring throbbing on one side of the head, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes a visual aura before the pain starts, and it can take a day or more to feel like yourself again. If you've tracked your triggers and tried the medications and attacks still keep interrupting your life, it may be worth looking at your neck. At Atlas in Balance, Dr. Caitlin Walker checks whether tension and misalignment at the top of your spine could be one of the things lowering your threshold for an attack.

One piece of the puzzle

Migraine has many triggers. The top of the neck is one we can check, and gently address when it's involved.

What's really happening

How the neck can feed a migraine

Migraine starts in the brain, but the brain doesn't work in isolation. The nerves at the top of the neck share a relay station in the brainstem with the trigeminal nerve, the main pain pathway for the head. When the top two vertebrae sit off-balance and the surrounding muscles stay tight, that steady stream of irritation may make it easier for other triggers, like poor sleep, stress, or hormonal shifts, to tip you into an attack. Many people with migraines also notice neck pain or stiffness before or during an episode.

The Blair difference

Precise care without forceful twisting

Quick, forceful neck twisting is the last thing most people with migraines want. Blair upper cervical care uses CBCT imaging to measure exactly how the top of your spine is sitting, then applies a light, specific correction there, with no cracking or rotation of the neck. The goal is to reduce one source of ongoing irritation and help your body hold that correction between visits, alongside the other things that help you manage migraines.

Your migraine exam

What we check when migraines keep coming back

Not every migraine has a neck component, so your first Oceanside visit starts with finding out whether yours might. Dr. Walker reviews your attack history and examines your neck before recommending any care. When the findings point to the upper neck, CBCT imaging shows exactly how the top two vertebrae are sitting. When they don't, we'll tell you, and we'll help you connect with a neurologist or headache specialist if you don't already have one.

  • How often attacks come, how long they last, and whether they bring aura, nausea, or light and sound sensitivity
  • Your known triggers, such as sleep changes, stress, certain foods, or your menstrual cycle
  • Whether neck pain or stiffness shows up before or during an attack
  • Tenderness and muscle tension at the base of the skull and the top of the neck
  • Neck range of motion and posture, including forward-head position
  • Neurological screening for signs that need medical referral, and a review of your current medications

Safety first

When to see a medical doctor first for a migraine

Upper cervical care is meant to work alongside your medical care for migraines, not replace it, so keep taking any medication your doctor has prescribed. Some symptoms can look like a migraine but need emergency care. Call 911 or go to an emergency room for any of the following.

  • A sudden, severe headache that peaks within about a minute, often described as the worst headache of your life
  • Weakness on one side of the body, facial drooping, trouble speaking, or an aura that lasts longer than an hour
  • A headache with fever, a stiff neck, confusion, or a rash
  • A headache that starts after a head injury
  • An attack that's very different from your usual pattern, or a first-ever migraine after age 50
  • Headache with vision changes or swelling during pregnancy or shortly after delivery

Our approach

Care that starts at the top of your spine

Many stubborn symptoms trace back to the top two bones of your neck, where your spine meets your skull. Dr. Caitlin Walker uses the Blair upper cervical technique, guided by CBCT imaging, to find and gently correct misalignments there, and she assesses the whole cervical spine rather than those two bones alone. No twisting, no cracking, just a precise, low-force correction matched to your anatomy.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chiropractor help with migraines?
It may, for some people. Research on chiropractic care for migraine is mixed, and migraine is a neurological condition that chiropractic care won't make disappear. When neck tension or misalignment is part of what sets off your attacks, gentle upper cervical care may help reduce how often or how hard they hit. Your exam is how we find out whether that's likely in your case.
What's the difference between a migraine and a headache?
A migraine is a neurological condition, not just a severe headache. Attacks often bring one-sided throbbing pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound, and some people see an aura first. Tension-type and cervicogenic headaches are more often a steady ache or pressure, and our headache relief page covers those in more detail.
Should I stop my migraine medication?
No. Don't change or stop any medication without talking to the doctor who prescribed it. Upper cervical care is meant to work alongside your medical care, not replace it.
Is upper cervical care safe if I have migraines?
Blair upper cervical care uses a light, precise correction with no twisting or cracking of the neck, which many migraine patients prefer. Dr. Walker screens every new patient for signs that need medical attention before recommending any care.
Can I come in during a migraine attack?
Your first visit is best scheduled between attacks, when you can sit comfortably through an exam and imaging. If you're in the middle of an attack that feels different or worse than usual, contact your doctor.
How many visits will I need for migraine relief?
It depends on what your exam and imaging show and how long the problem has been present. Most people need a series of visits to correct and stabilize the area. We'll suggest keeping a migraine diary so you can see whether the pattern is changing.
Do hormones play a role in migraines?
For many women they do. Attacks often cluster around a period, and that pattern is worth sharing at your consultation. If painful periods are part of the picture too, our menstrual cramp relief page explains how we approach them.

General questions

Is upper cervical chiropractic different from a regular adjustment?
Yes. Upper cervical care starts at the top two bones of the spine, the atlas (C1) and axis (C2), using precise, low-force corrections guided by imaging. It isn't limited to those two bones, though: Dr. Walker examines and cares for the whole cervical spine, since the rest of your neck affects how well a correction holds. There's no twisting, cracking, or popping, and every adjustment is tailored to your exact anatomy.
Do adjustments hurt?
No. Blair corrections use a light, specific contact, so most people feel gentle pressure and nothing more. Many patients are surprised by how calm the experience is, especially if traditional adjusting has made them nervous before.
What happens at my first visit?
Your first visit includes a conversation about your health history, a thorough neurological and orthopedic exam, and CBCT imaging when it's indicated. Dr. Walker then explains what she found and recommends a plan in plain language, with no pressure and no rush.
