Could Eagle Syndrome Be the Cause of Your Neck and Facial Pain?

When we think about chronic neck pain, facial discomfort, or a sensation of something being “stuck” in the throat, Eagle Syndrome isn’t usually the first condition that comes to mind. Yet for those living with it, the symptoms can be persistent, confusing, and even debilitating.

At Atlas in Balance Chiropractic, we specialize in Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic—a gentle, precise approach that may offer relief for those dealing with this often-overlooked condition.

What Is Eagle Syndrome?
Eagle Syndrome is a rare condition caused by an elongated styloid process (a small, pointed bone just below your ear) or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament. These changes can compress nearby nerves and blood vessels, resulting in a wide range of symptoms. It’s more common than most people realize, and it’s often misdiagnosed or dismissed entirely.

Common Symptoms of Eagle Syndrome

Symptoms vary, but many patients report:

  • Throat pain or the sensation of a lump in the throat
  • Neck pain that radiates to the ear or jaw
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Dizziness or visual disturbances
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Pain when turning the head
  • Changes in voice or speech
  • Clicking, catching, or discomfort when swallowing

These symptoms may mimic other conditions such as TMJ disorder, trigeminal neuralgia, or even anxiety—leading many to a frustrating journey for answers.

How Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Can Help
At Atlas in Balance, we focus on the upper cervical spine—particularly the relationship between the skull, atlas (C1), and axis (C2). This area is home to critical neurological, vascular, and structural components that can be influenced by misalignment.

🌀 Improved Structural Balance
Misalignment in the upper cervical spine can place abnormal stress on the styloid process and surrounding tissues. By gently correcting the alignment of the head and neck (without any twisting or cracking), we can reduce the mechanical tension contributing to symptoms.

⚡ Nervous System Regulation
The upper cervical area influences the cranial nerves and autonomic nervous system. Realigning this area may relieve pressure on irritated nerves, reducing pain, muscle tightness, and dysfunction often associated with Eagle Syndrome.

🔄 Enhanced Blood Flow and Drainage
Blair Upper Cervical adjustments can also improve vascular flow to and from the brain, which may help with symptoms like dizziness, brain fog, and visual issues.

The Role of 3D Imaging (CBCT) in Diagnosing Eagle Syndrome
One of the most powerful tools we use at Atlas in Balance is Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)—a specialized form of 3D imaging that gives us a detailed look at the bones and joints of the upper neck and skull base.

Unlike traditional X-rays, CBCT scans can clearly visualize the styloid process, allowing us to see if it's elongated or if the stylohyoid ligament is calcified—both hallmarks of Eagle Syndrome.

This advanced imaging not only helps confirm the presence of Eagle Syndrome but also allows us to:

  • Assess the degree of anatomical variation
  • Determine how the styloid process may be affecting surrounding tissues
  • Customize your Blair Upper Cervical adjustment based on your unique structure

Many patients have gone years without a proper diagnosis simply because standard imaging doesn’t capture this level of detail. CBCT allows us to uncover what others may have missed.

When to Seek Help
If you’re experiencing unexplained facial pain, recurring headaches, dizziness, or throat discomfort—and have been told “everything looks normal”—it might be time to consider a different perspective.

Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic, combined with advanced 3D imaging, gives us a unique advantage in uncovering and addressing the root of your symptoms.
